Beaches, Bibles, & Being Filled: What I Learned About Self-Care As A Christian

Self-care has been a HOT term, phrase, or buzzword that has been catching my attention but others as well within in the last year. We’ve found ourselves in positions where we’re tired, burnt out, running on fumes as we try to survive the day-to-day. The demands of life seem like it extends beyond the 24 hours in a day giving us little to no time at all to rest. We are all physically, emotionally, mentally, and most of all spiritually exhausted.

I’ll be honest and say that I thought self-care meant being more selfish than what the world already is. It wasn’t until I found myself feeling tired and weary without any explanation as to why. It went beyond the physical. My spirit was feeling worn down too.

After having enough of feeling like this, I decided to explore what this self-care deal was all about. I’ve discovered that to help get me filled to the brim inside-out, going to the beach is one of my favorite go-to’s for self-care. The smell of the salt air, the palm trees swaying, the sound of the waves crashing from the ocean; I LOVE IT!

One of the fabulous things about living in South Florida is I’m 10 minutes away from the beach. I believe it’s a HUGE BLESSING and answer to my prayers coming from Southern California where there are TONS of beaches everywhere.

Once every 2-3 weeks, I go to this hotel that’s on the beach. In the upper levels, there’s a giant room open to the public called The Living Room. Lots of plush, white couches, chairs, with floor to ceiling windows letting in glorious natural light. Some of the windows open up as sliding doors which lead to a BEAUTIFUL balcony overlooking Fort Lauderdale beach.

The balcony is my FAVORITE spot as it’s filled with more luxe-looking weather-resistant table and chairs for outdoors. In its peaceful atmosphere, this is where I go to meet with The Lord. Sometimes, I write in my prayer journal. Sometimes, I bring my bible to read or my iPod to listen to worship music. Other times, I sit in God’s Presence in the tranquil atmosphere and just let Him fill me.

I bring my burdens, worries, and pain as well as my praises and undivided attention to Him there in my safe place. What’s makes this place even more special is that God’s there with a warm invitation to rest in Him (Matthew 11:28-29). I trade in my empty, tired, and broken spaces for God’s Ideas, Life, and dreams along with healing for my mind, body, and spirit.

Jesus practiced self-care and understood how vital it was. He would often retreat to spend some time alone to be filled by His Father (Matthew 14:23, Luke 5:16). I’ve also discovered that self-care for me starts inside.

Seeking God and being filled by Him is what self-care is all about for me as a Christian. God, the eternal source will provide everything that is needed for me to be my BEST as He is my REST.
