Power Playlist: 5 Christian/Gospel Songs That Help Me Weather Life’s Storms

by | Jan 7, 2019 | Daily Faith

I LOVE MUSIC! My beloved hot pink iPod literally has hundreds of songs to get me in a groove no matter what the mood. In my playlist section, there’s a playlist specifically for Christian/Gospel music titled, “Take Me To Church.” These songs have been put me in a mood of worship adding some extra sparkle to my day or getting me through the long, tough ones.

While there are songs that are starred and played on repeat over again, there are some songs that have helped me get through some dark seasons. These songs have been a SOLID pillar in my praise and worship playlist as they give me hope and strength to praise God even in the midst of what can seem like impossible circumstances.

Here are my top 5 songs that are a MUST for me to listen to when dealing with life’s storms and why:

Song #1: “Revelation 19:1” by Stephen Hurd

This song is very special to me as I remember hearing this in the church as a toddler. The mass choir would sing this song setting the atmosphere for the presence of God to be thick in the sanctuary. It’s not often that you hear songs from the book of Revelation. I call this the “song of heaven” or “heaven’s national anthem” as I imagine all the angels in heaven joyfully singing it.

After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia!” Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God!”

(Revelation 19:1)

During my darkest time, I play this song as it lifts me out of current circumstance and places me in a heavenly perspective of what’s to come. When I hear this song, I think of how glorious it will be where I can sing along joyfully with the great multitude in heaven forever free from pain, sorrow, or tears. In the meantime, here on earth, I’m reminded of God’s AWESOME attributes of who He is and what He can do.

Song #2: “Do It Again” by Elevation Worship

That’s right! This song made my list. The song’s upbeat melody and lyrics get me charged for Jesus reminding me of God’s faithfulness proclaiming that if God has moved mountains before, He is SURE to do it again.

In my dark moments when all I can see is the tall mountains from the valleys, this song gives me the strength to keep going and trusting in God. This timeless song reminds me that only God can do the impossible over and over again. Plus, it’s fun to sing. You’re probably singing it in your head right now. It’s cool.

Song #3: “Yes” by Shekinah Glory Ministry

I can remember going through a long, dark season where I was battling with depression HARD. I was listening to the Pandora App and tears came to my eyes when I heard this song. In its prophetic lyrics, I could hear God asking,

“I know it’s hard right now but will you say ‘Yes‘ to My Will and Way trusting that it will work out for your good and My Glory?”

Not only was He speaking to my current situation but telling me that MORE would be required of me as I go higher in seeking Him in the future and to not be afraid. I’ve noticed that it’s in my hardest, darkest, and most painful situations, my spirit is always placed in a humbling posture with tears in my eyes still wanting to say ‘Yes, LORD’ though uncomfortable or confusing when hearing this song. I get the strength to carry on knowing that glory is will be soon around the corner in a higher place in God.

Song #4: “Resurrecting” by Elevation Worship

By Your Spirit, I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected King is resurrecting me

The lyrics alone in this song gives me massive strength as Elevation Worship sings about the triumph of Christ raising from what looked like apparent death and defeat from the cross and grave. This same God is the one who not only lives eternally but also lives in me. The same power that’s in Christ is the same power that’s in me.

I serve a God Who’s name is means victory and peace. When I hear this song, it reminds me to not look from the viewpoint of defeat but of victory.

Song #5 “Oceans” (Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong United

OF COURSE, this song made the playlist. It wouldn’t be an excellent Christian playlist without it. This song deeply resonated with me during the season of transition from being single to married. I was being called to the deep and the unknown as I was preparing to live a new life in a new state.

Like Peter, it felt like I was walking on the deepest parts of the ocean afraid of my feet failing. Whenever I feel like God calling me into the deep and unknown, this song ALWAYS reminds me to fix my eyes and thoughts on Jesus instead of the frightening tall waves rising and crashing around me. Since then, I’ve had scary moments of walking by faith and not by seeing whats around giving God room to do the impossible. The song puts me at ease knowing no matter how tall the waves, how deep the waters, how fierce the storm is, Jesus is with me steadily holding my hand and preventing the waters from overtaking me.

There you have it. Here’s a small list of powerful, MUST HAVE songs that always get me through the toughest, darkest times.
