The Christian and the Coronavirus

You can’t escape it!

It’s constantly on the television, news and social media apps, and even through word of mouth.

COVID-19 or “Coronavirus” has literally gone VIRAL.

People all over globally are preparing for the absolute worst while self-isolating and quarantining themself in fears of getting exposed to the virus. The death tolls climbs higher, claiming the lives of what’s deemed as “staggering.”

Water is being rationed in grocery stores. Masks, Lysol, and hand sanitizer can’t stay one minute on the shelf before it’s gone. Schools, jobs, social events, even churches are closing left and right.

What I find MOST bizarre is the mass shortage of… toilet paper.

Apparently, this virus has reached a pandemic level.

Somehow the media thinks it’s doing an adequate job of trying to calm the fears of a worldwide crises. But all I see is the masses gripped with panic and distress while consuming the deceptive and inflammatory reports for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I would expect pandemonium to reach the secular world. However, I’m rather surprised how those in the body of Christ are GRIPPED WITH THE SPIRIT OF FEAR over this too.

This week, while leading my Bible study group, attendance looked eerily thin as people are choosing to stay home out of fear of contracting the virus. One woman is not only leaving my group but leaving the country out of grave concerns.

I do recognize the seriousness of what the coronavirus is and what it does. I’m aware of the capabilities of what it can do and the danger it causes. I also deeply understand how frightening this virus is.

However, I believe as Christians, it’s imperative that we REFUSE to live our lives in constant fear because of this virus.

Make no mistake. This is NOT to say we should live our lives recklessly or irresponsibly.

I wholeheartedly believe with common sense, prayer and other spiritual disciplines, and the Holy Spirit’s discernment, we can take universal precautions to combat fear and the virus. Here’s how:

Practice Good Hygiene

We’re still in the thick of cold and flu season.

Whenever you get the chance, please continue to frequently wash your hands.

I’m also a firm believer in sanitizing, disinfecting, and sterilizing. I’m sorry, I can’t help it, it’s the former pharmacy tech in me. So be sure that the surfaces in your homes are safe.

Take Care of Your Temple

God has given us an amazing body that the Holy Spirit dwells in and we’re to respect and be excellent stewards of them. My dad always tells me,

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

What does that mean? It means building and strengthening our immune systems to prevent us from catching any virus.

Find yourself tired? Get some rest!

How’s your eating habits? Are you getting enough nutrients?

What about exercise and getting active? All these are important.

Stress and worry compromises the immune system making your susceptible to viruses and other illness. Continuing to fixate on fear only breeds more of it.

Pray, Praise, and Read God’s Word

We’re living in some very dark times. Many would even call it the “last days.”

As Christians, we are to be light of the world (Matthew 5:14)

When we constantly give into fear, we run the danger of looking like the rest of the world who doesn’t have hope or Jesus.

We can not say we have the light if we are running around in darkness!

Our prayers and praise helps deepen our relationship with God and also draw strength to make it during these scary and difficult times. We need to pray and worship like never before and remember that The Creator of heaven and earth is MUCH BIGGER than this virus or any other catastrophe.

I also can not stress enough how important reading and getting into God’s word is. I don’t mean to sound brash but, if we get into God’s word and really study like we should, we would know in our minds, hearts, and spirits that what is going on today is to be expected before The Lord comes.

Scripture is very clear about it.

In studying God’s word, The Holy Spirit will also give us discernment on what is truth, deception, and flat out lies when dealing with the world’s version of news and information.

Shine Your Light

During this global coronavirus crises, NOW is the time to BOLDLY show the world that’s lost and without hope WHY we believe in Who we believe in. If Jesus is with us and will be always, we have no reason to fear.

God has already given us the weapons to be courageous and victorious. Let’s use it and not fear.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

(2 Timothy 1:2)
