3 Scriptures to Calm Your Anxiety In the Midst of Uncertainty

I was once told that the phrase, “Do not be afraid” or “Do not fear” was in the bible at least 365 times. This was to prove a point that anxiety is real and we should be reminded daily not to be afraid every day of the week. While I haven’t personally counted how many times that phrase is in there, I can say that the Bible is very adamant about addressing fear and anxiety.

For the past three days, whether through a devotional or my bible reading plan, I’ve got some scripture that addressed anxiety and it was generally centered around the uncertainty of the future or what’s to come. I tend to pay attention to what people may call these “coincidences.” However, I’d like to call it having my spiritual antenna up asking God to begin His broadcast day on the message He’d like to share.

I find myself in a place of uncertainty and have been here for a long time. I know that God had spoken a word but I’m dealing with that messy middle. It’s the tangled transition where nothing really makes sense any more but you have that sliver of faith knowing that it will…somehow.

This unknown has caused a lot of tension, anxiety, with lots of questions. Daily I fill my prayer journal asking God about the “what if’s” and “how this or that will work out.” While I don’t get a detailed answer of His plans, He does give me His words in a span of 3 days.

Day 1: For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:13 NLT)

Day 2: Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you, he will neither fail you or abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT)

Day 3: Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am you God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NLT)

Day 1 was a great word but after day 2, I leaned in a little closer. By day 3, I’m thinking, “Okay! God is really trying to tell me something and it’s really important if He’s said this at least 3 times in various ways.”

As you can see, there’s a pattern here. God reminds us over and over of his help, us not fearing, and Him being with us. Each time these three scriptures were spoken, there was a sense of anxiety and uncertainty about transitions being made or what’s to come.

But God’s message in no matter what time or season remained the same:

God will help us through whatever season of hardship or uncertainty we’re currently in and we do not need to fear because He’s present.

One thing I found extremely comforting is that God not only gives us commands but there are so many promises in those short sentences. We are commanded to:

  • Be strong and courageous

  • Not be afraid

  • Not be discouraged

But the promises that He gives us in the midst of combatting our fear and anxiety in the midst of uncertainty is beautiful. This shows us that:

  • God with us

  • God is our strength and help

  • God powerful and sovereign

  • God is our God

  • God is present

Now the question on the floor is, do we believe this? Do we believe that what God did for Joshua, the Israelites, and others, He’ll do for us? Keep in mind that if you have Christ in you, you are part of God’s royal family and this promise is for you also.

Putting Believe to Action

Of course, these scriptures make us feel good and may very well cure or keep our anxiety at bay…for the moment. However, it’s really important to get these truths into our hearts lest the anxiety of what we’re dealing with is so great that we become overwhelmed.

A few practical things we can do is:

  • Draw strength from God’s word and pray these scriptures over our lives. (Memorizing these scriptures will make sure that not only our minds will get it but our spirits as well).

  • Worship God that He goes before us and with us (We can celebrate that we NEVER EVER have to walk the valley of death and uncertainty alone).

  • Believe that God will not abandon us even if our situations, circumstances, or the enemy tells us that He has. (God promises that He will never do that to us).

You may be going through a crisis or tragedy and I’m so sorry that you have. But please, take heart. It may look like having more “month than money” (I’ve been there plenty of times). It could be a relational issue, job, family, whatever it may be. I pray that your confidence will be firmly secure in God and that you will stand strong and courageous as God holds you with His victorious hand.

Out of the three scriptures, which one are you holding on to? Have you experienced a time or currently experiencing where God calmed all your anxieties about the fear of the unknown? Let’s talk in the comments!
